SoCal Firestorm 2007

The recent fires in San Diego and elsewhere around Southern California are stark reminders of how quickly

our lives can change. Working in Ranch Bernardo, I was evacuated and sent home Otay Mesa only to discover that my house was in the path of yet another fire!
Fortunately for my family, the prevailing winds shifted and we did not have to be evacuated as so many thousands of others eventually would. One thing that we quickly realized was just how unprepared we were for such a disaster. If I had come home to as mandatory evacuation order, my wife and I would have probably had time enough to grab the pets and run! The average time between being called with an evacuation order and the police clearing people out was between 5 and 15 minutes! If you think about what you will need to survive for up to 72 hours on you own, you can see that there is no way to put it all together in a matter of minutes. Just what does it take to survive for three days on you own. I have included a link to a checklist of items you should have ready in case of most any disaster. Also here is a link that offers tips, information and pre-assembled survival kits
The more we can do for ourselves in a disaster situation, the more the firefighters and Police can concentrate on protecting us and helping to lessen the effects of the disaster.
