Anza Borrego Desert

Earlier this week, my son and I took a day trip to the Anza-Borrego Desert, east of San Diego, Ca. I have always heard that there were many great sites to photograph there, but since we have had so little rain for the past couple of years, I knew the desert wild flowers would not be in bloom this year. So I wasn't really expecting to see anything really spectacular. I couldn't have been more wrong! Besides the fantastic geological formations we came across this group of Bighorn sheep browsing in a field just off the trail we had been exploring. What a treat to see these majestic animals in the wild! My son and I watched them for a good fifteen minutes before they scurried up the side of the rocky hill behind them. For those few minutes, as we communed with these creatures, all of life's troubles seemed very distant.

Whatever else we do in life, protecting our wilderness and vast open spaces from the continued destruction from uncontrolled development is essential. I don't think I would want to live in a world without wildlife. When I moved to San Diego some thirty years ago, there were open spaces within fifteen minutes from downtown where you could drive out in the desert scrub and see coyote, deer, an occasional golden eagle as well as fox and rabbits. Now these areas are covered multi-million dollar homes shopping malls and industrial parks. There are children in San Diego who have never seen any wild animals except at the Zoo! What a shame.

Much of my photography is of wildlife both plant and animal. I hope that by sharing these examples of the wonders of nature you will be inspired to become more involved in preserving our natural surroundings so future generations may be able to experiance what my son and I were priveledged to see.
